About

My name is Terrance, and I'm a 23-year-old father of two beautiful children. That's always the most important thing to tell, at least in my opinion. But for those of you who wonder what I do for a living, you'll be pleased to know that I am a freelance writer, and perhaps a poor one at that. But, I keep getting paid so that's always good news!

new reading

Funny story about this new reading: I've known of William F. Buckley, Jr. for quite a long time. I remember my father watching his PBS program, Firing Line, when I was little. Once his show went off there air after 50 or so years, I forgot about him. But during the latter part of my teenage years, I became interested in politics, so there again did Buckley appear. He was a conservative/libertarian writer, commentator, founder of National Review, and I hated him. I was a huge liberal and hated anything conservative or Republican.

The older I got, the more mature I became. I still disagreed with Buckley on basically everything - save abortion - but I respected him. I also knew that I wanted to be as well-read as him, as well-spoken as him, and I wanted to write like him. I remember reading and reading and reading his articles because they were so well-written. Nobody, not even the most ardent liberal, has criticized his writing ability. It's that good. Even people who vehemently disagree with him acknowledge his ability.

But I never knew he wrote fiction. I never looked into his biography enough to know that he was actually a very well-respected fiction writer, appearing on the New York Times bestseller list many times.  Well,  I was perusing Barnes & Noble one day and came across this book. I saw the name, Buckley, and decided to buy it. I didn't know what it was about and didn't know it was a novel. I thought it was a nonfiction book about the Soviet Union. It wasn't until I brought it home that I realized it was a novel. I read it, fell in love with Buckley's character and Buckley's ability to write fiction, and have since searched amazon for all 17 of his novels.

If you like Tom Clancy works, you'll like Buckley. (Buckley is a better writer, though.)

Final Grade: A
